Freezer stuffed full of garden veg....and why do we want a milk frother?

I tried the sandwich souffle for my lunch yesterday......it was nice but I felt it lacked a bit of flavour.  I think using Emmental cheese in the sandwich was a bit of a mistake - I like Emmental but it was too mild, a mature Cheddar would have been better.  I also think a spread of chilli jam or some other strong flavoured type of chutney, or even mustard, in the sandwich would improve the dish hugely.  A sprinkle of smoked paprika stirred into the whisked egg and milk would be good too.  I'll try those ideas next time.

The last couple of weeks I've been processing and freezing lots of veggies from the garden.  We now have several tubs of tomato, courgette and onion pasta sauce, roasted courgettes with herbs for soup, tomatoes roasted with oil and balsamic vinegar, whole roasted shallots, and carrots roasted with dill and parsley.  Husband dug up the 2 remaining potato plants - all the others were grown in bags, these 2 were planted directly into the ground and have produced bigger yields.  So today I'm going to roast all the small spuds whole and freeze them, some of the bigger ones I'll boil and mash and freeze too.  That'll be it for freezing stuff - well, until we eat some of it, as there's hardly any room left in the freezer.  It's been a very good year for growing veggies.  We still have yellow and green courgettes growing (they seem neverending), along with green peppers waiting to turn red, aubergines (only small at present) and lots of leeks.  Oh, and butternut squashes, I forgot about those.  I'll pick some of the apples off the tree in the front garden and make a crumble tomorrow - our neighbours said they thought the tree was a cooking apple but I don't know about that, the apples are quite small, they're certainly not Bramleys.

Husband has just bought a milk frother on ebay (I get the email notifications) - I know not why, he hardly ever drinks coffee, he's a tea man, and I have those frothy coffee sachets so it's not something I need either!  So we don't need a milk frother.....still, it's his money, if he wants to waste it on unnecessary crap that's up to him I guess 😒 **

There's a big car boot sale (well, the poster says it's big, that remains to be seen) on the village playing field on Monday, we'll probably have a walk over there.  Just another week of school holidays left, this summer seems to have flown by.  It'll be good to be able to walk through town without the hordes of tourists, and along the prom without tripping over kids running around, or loud drink-fuelled hen and stag parties....I think the women are louder and more obnoxious than the men a lot of the time.  I can't be too judgemental though....I can remember a few things I did that I'm not proud of, when I was young and stupid!

** I've just read the email - the milk frother is coming from China and will take a month to get here!  At least he's only wasted £4.80, what possessed him to order it I don't know 😕

  1. Frothy hot chocolate? I can't think what else you could use a milk frother for, there must be other uses - surely!
Your ideas to improve the cheese sandwich sound good. That's the beauty of simple recipes like that, it's easy to adjust to your own taste.
How great that you now have a freezer full of lovely home-grown veggies. All those tasty meals to come! xx

    1. Yes, the baked sandwich definitely needs a stronger flavour, but I will be having it again, I enjoyed it.

  2. Re the milk frother, I got gifted one. Never use it for coffee, like you, have the sachets, but I do use it for salad dressings, oil dressings for roasting veggies, beating eggs etc. It's just an aerator really.

On an unrelated note, am visiting Blue Anchor on way back from Instow soon, if I want a couple of hours there, where can I park?.Also, remember you said there was a cafe in the caravan park, can you just walk in from the front? I only know the cafe by the railway station. Thanks so much but don't worry if you don't have time to answer.

    1. There's lots of parking all along the seafront road and - unusually for down here - it's all free! The Hoburne Bay cafe is also right on the seafront road, accessible from the road.

  3. Maybe your husband ordered the milk frother by mistake? My husband used to order all sorts by mistake, and frequently signed up - without realising - for repeating orders of various things! It was a right pain sorting it all out 🙄. Luckily, he doesn't go on Amazon any more now, and leaves the ordering of things to me.

    1. No, Jane, he knew what he was ordering....he just can't really explain why. Never mind, as H.I. said above, I can use it for salad dressings - thanks for that.

  4. My mother in law used to call the egg dipped sandwiches cheesy dreams. She always added flavours as you have now realised yourself. My daughter’s favourite was beans and cheese with Tomato ketchup on the side! Like you, I have one frothy coffee a day so the little milk frother I had went to the charity shop. Catriona

  6. I've got a milk frother from Whittards must be about 25 years old and use it occasionally to make a frothy coffee. I just put mug of milk or half milk and half water in the microwave for 2 minutes then add spoonful coffee ( or to your taste) then whizz it up and it comes out very nice( cheaper than the bought sachets too) and no additives.

  7. Hmmm I milk frother could be a good purchase for the times you run out of your frothy coffee sachets. Not one for frothy coffees here. Straight black, no sugar.
Love the ideas for spicing up your sandwich.

    God bless.

  8. I'm sure Tony shakes his head at some of the things I buy online. I've just ordered some raw sheep fleece to use as a garden mulch. I can just picture his face when it arrives
