I hate winter!

Well, perhaps hate is a bit of a strong word.....let's just say that winter is really not my favourite season, I don't like the short days, horrible weather and being stuck indoors for what seems like weeks.

Aldi yesterday was decimated, lots of gaps on the shelves - either people had got there an hour before us to stock up, or they hadn't had a delivery, perhaps.  I got most of what I needed, except for 3 or 4 toiletries items, we'll nip into town today for those, husband needs to go to Travis Perkins anyway.

The occupant of one of the bungalows opposite us drove their little car up onto the lawn in front of their bungalow to park a couple of days ago (which we're told not to do) - I think because they were having visitors and wanted to leave their parking space free for them.  Husband saw them do it and said to me "that's not a wise move!" - with all the rain we've had the past few weeks, the ground is extremely soft.  Well, yesterday the inevitable happened - the car had sunk into the lawn and they couldn't move it.  In the afternoon a garage truck arrived to tow it out.  Must have cost them a bit.  Made a mess of the lawn as well.

I had a sinus headache which kept waking me up Tuesday night, it persisted all day yesterday too.  Not had one of those for ages, thankfully it's eased off now.  Consequently, I didn't do much yesterday, I really didn't feel like it.  Husband did a bit more of the fence, he's making a good job of it, it'll look good when it's finished.  He's running out of supplies, hence the need to go to Travis Perkins.

We're forecast a load more rain today, so no walk again.  I know we've not been flooded, so are very fortunate in that respect, but I'm so done with all this rain and wind.  The weather reporter yesterday said we've already had the usual amount of rain for January in the first few days 😲.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure we never had such extremes of weather years ago when I was a child.  Even the seasons are all skew-whiff now, and it must be down to climate change/global warming, which mankind is responsible for.  But winter isn't done yet, so I'll just have to put up with the weather for the next few weeks.  At least the forecast is better from tomorrow onwards, although it's getting colder.

I didn't do the menu plan/freezer inventory yesterday, so have that to do today.  I'd also like to start thinking about plants for the garden, although I do need to see what comes up in it first.  I'm happy to see that there are loads of Spring bulbs coming through, it'll look lovely in a few weeks.  There are several big pots in the back garden, all of which appear to be full of weeds, so I'll be emptying those out and refilling them with some nice plants in due course.

  1. Totally agree with you Sooze about winter! I'm sick of cold, dark, wet and windy now. The trouble is, I always think, come New Year, that winter is almost over - and it ain't! The worst is yet to come.😱
Do you take anything for your sinus headaches? I hate taking medication, but when my sinuses are really bad I take Sinutab. I also bought a Netti pot last year, which I use occasionally when my nose is particularly stuffy.
Oh well, Spring is just around the corner and we can enjoy the warmer days in the garden. xx

    2. Sinutab is a decongestant/paracetamol tablet, available at the chemist. Expensive but I find it very effective. Recommended dosage is 2 tablets, but I usually just take 1, which clears my sinus headache all day. I think I bought my (plastic) neti pot from ebay (new, but from China, of course!). It came with some sachets to mix in, but I generally just use cooled, boiled water on its own or with about 1/4tsp regular salt. If you have a stuffed up nose, it certainly clears a lot of muck! xx

  2. Re extremes of weather - in 70+ years I've seen quite a few extremes, and not just recently. 1963 - snow on the ground for all of Jan/Feb, and most of Feb below zero temps, two years in the 1970s - Boxing Day hunt meet - one year 12 inches snowl the next year temps over 20deg C and people warring shorts. The 1987 hurricane that wasn't over southern England..,..
There have always been extremes of weather.

    1. I guess what I really meant was that I don't remember having such persistent rain for weeks and weeks, when I was a child.

  3. We did loads more snow in the winter in Somerset, I remember loads of snow days when the coach could not get to out village. I'm with you on the cold wet windy days, but it is so boring inside, can't get into my crafting mindset yet.

    1. When we first moved here, our Somerset friends said "oh we hardly ever have snow here". Well, that first winter there was so much snow that our little village (Catcott) was cut off for a week! No bus or post could get through.

  4. My late husband alwys used Sinutab but they didn't work on me.

I've learned to embrace winter as a time to rest and enjoy being indoors. Other than moving abroad there is really no other choice

  5. I love Winter, but this persistent rain is really getting me (and the dogs) down. It's also making the mornings even darker than usual, I couldn't even see to read by the light of the lamp properly this morning.

  6. I quite agree with the weather being wonky the past while. So many people say that climate change is not real, but man all they have to do is look at the swings we are getting. Hope your sinus headache goes soon, I dread mine.

    God bless.

  7. I live in one of the wettest places in England. It rains a lot, all year round, and I often have to wear boots in Summer. My mum struggles with it, even though we've lived here since 1976.
