Baking, beans and vets

Busy morning, I made a fruit cake and apple crumble bars - was going to make individual little tarts but it was easier to make a traybake and then just cut it into bars....anything for an easy life!  I also made pork, sage and apple burgers for husband - I might even try one myself, they look so nice.

I don't mind the look, smell or even taste of pork or chicken mince on the odd occasion, but can't stand beef or lamb mince, they taste far too 'meaty' and strong for me now, and I hate the smell of them.  I'm eating less and less meat - haven't eaten beef, lamb, pork as chops or joints, or any kind of offal for a couple of years now.  I have occasionally eaten a bacon sandwich about once a month but not anymore, the last 2 or 3 times I've not finished them, deciding I really don't like the bacon after a few mouthfuls.  I will eat a pork sausage very occasionally, and don't mind a savoury mince type thing or lasagne made with chicken or pork mince, but I don't eat any of them on a regular basis.  Most of my meals are veg based, usually with eggs or cheese, I eat some kind of fish about 3 times a week.  Sundays if we're having a roast, I normally have my own homemade nut roast, or just the veggies, Yorkshire and stuffing.  I do class myself as vegetarian - well, pescatarian strictly speaking - but I'm not fanatical about it and don't make an issue out of it - if we have a meal at someone's house and they serve something meaty, having forgotten I don't eat meat, I just quietly push it to one side of my plate - or give it to husband!

I'm soaking dried beans overnight and making baked beans in the slow cooker tomorrow - we're having our friend over tomorrow and I don't know how long she'll be staying, so getting the slow cooker ready in the morning means I won't need to do anything much later on (she's coming late morning, she won't be staying for supper).  Husband will have some chicken drumsticks with his beans, I'll just have sourdough bread and a sprinkle of cheese on the beans.

I'm on the last one of my library books that I got well before Christmas (I've renewed them once) so will go to the library on Thursday for more.  We also need to collect our prescriptions and take Betty to the vet to be weighed and collect her flea & tick med....apparently there's a new rule now stating that dogs have to be weighed at the vets every time before getting the meds.  I know the dosage is weight-related, but as Betty's weight has been fairly consistent for years now, she never had to be weighed every time before (thank goodness we humans don't have to be weighed before receiving meds!!).  She's got her annual vaccination jab next month, so it's an expensive few weeks for her (well, for us, she doesn't pay the bills 😉😂).

  1. It is obvious you love cooking. I only cook for one, but I enjoy it also. Became a vegetarian in 1992...won't digress at all...has kept me alive, but that being said, I do not care what others eat. Everyone who knows me knows I don't eat animals or anything with eyes. It started for health...but now, there is no way. LOL...I enjoy your blog, and it is almost the only one I read anymore. It is real to life...about everyday goings on, and truthful. Thank you for writing. I will keep reading. Have a good day

  2. Another veggie here, for over 40 years. I try to be vegan, as I can't eat dairy (lactose intolerant), don't like eggs much and honey makes me gag (even the smell). I'm not overly strict about the vegan thing, but I couldn't eat meat or fish.
I've not heard that about dogs having to be weighed before meds can be given. I wonder if it applies to cats, too. Mind you, we no longer have animals. Our two beloved cats had to be euthanised several years ago, and we just couldn't go through that again. xx

  3. I agree: thank goodness I don't have to be weighed before picking up my prescription! I noticed when we had George that the vet always got him on the scales first.
Apple crumble bars. Do you make them with a base?

  4. The beans sound nice. I eat meat but often I prefer beans. I can see me switching over more and more.

  5. Your meals sound wonderful. I really try to have meatless meals at least twice a month. Or at least meals that don't contain a great deal of meat.

I am going to have to look up nut roasts to see about perhaps making something like that for myself.

    God bless.

  6. I'm the other way regarding meat, I won't eat many things which have been cut or minced and put back together, I just don't know what's in them.

  7. We use the slow cooker often during the winter months and then it more or less gets packed away in summer, we had a lovely stew in it yesterday. We're big meat eaters, Mick would wonder what had happened if I put a meat free meal in front of him. My mum and dad were always the meat and two veg type but my mum went completely off meat as she got older, she didn't know why, just didn't enjoy the taste any longer.

  8. I'm late catching up on a few days post Sooze but I wanted to say - chives do recover, there's no need to buy a new plant.
They die back to nothing then come up again the following year, in my experience as good as before.

  9. Our Vet weighs our pets every time they are seen...always have here in the States. Our People Doctors also make us get weighed...at every visit, darn it! lolol But yes, it's all about prescribed medications. Rx X body weight.
We love beef...so many things to make.
    Stay warm!
    hugs

  10. I didn't realise that it was a rule, but the vets where we live now has always asked the dogs to step on the scales before we even sit down in the waiting room, so much so that Mavis caused much mirth yesterday when she walked in and sat straight on the scales ... she had lost 200g, good girl. :-)

  11. My chives are really old now and come up early spring without fail. Ditto for the thyme, mint and oregano. The sage is looking battered right now but will recover and the bay and rosemary are all year rounders anyway.

Your meals always sound so delicious and very, very healthy. xx
