There seems to be some confusion over what is meant by Bread Pudding/Bread and Butter Pudding, not only among my readers, it seems to be a pretty widespread thing. They are actually two distinct and different things. My Mum made both of these regularly when we kids lived at home, as did her mother before her.....probably because they were pretty cheap, easy and quick to make.
This is Bread Pudding, which I made yesterday morning, obviously minus the bit we've eaten:-
It's made by tearing bread up into pieces, putting it in a large bowl with dried fruit, sugar and mixed spice, pouring a mixture of milk, eggs and melted butter over and leaving it to soak for a couple of hours, then squidging it up with your (clean, obviously!) hands and putting in a lined tin and baking. It sets firm and is eaten sliced in squares, usually cold although can be warm with custard, it's just like a fruit cake, albeit quite a different texture, being somewhat stodgy, certainly very filling.
Bread and Butter Pudding, on the other hand, is a dessert not a cake:-
(image taken off the internet)I do make Bread Pudding (the cake) reasonably often, it's one of husband's favourite cakes.

Thanks for that clarification, Sooze. I wonder why, in my 71 years, I've never heard of bread pudding? Although I probably assumed it was bread and butter pudding anyway! I could just eat some of either (or both) right now.😋 xx
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was a regional thing K? I don't know, or perhaps made by workers in rural areas, as my grandparents were. xx
DeleteMy mum made both but I only like bread and butter pudding if we had to have it as I found the other one more of a fruitcake and not too fond of that
ReplyDeleteI had bread pudding at Epcot long ago. When I had it in England both trips even better. Yummmm. Enjoy your blog and the explanations/. You know I often do not know what certain things are.
ReplyDeleteWe had bread and butter pudding as children to fill us up. My dad used to make it for us. If I find cheap yellow stickered hot cross buns I always buy them and use them for bread and butter pudding. They work really well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that explanation! I wrongly assumed you meant bread and butter pud but the bread cake - now that sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of bread pudding.
ReplyDeleteBread and butter pudding is awesome when the bread is sandwiched with apricot jam.
I have never had either, but right now I am thinking that both would make a great inexpensive addition to a meal. Thanks for explaining the difference.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Oh yes, I love both, unfortunately my husband doesn't so they don't get made! Bread pudding reminds me of my childhood, I used to walk past a shop on the way to school that sold bread pudding slices. I used to get some offcuts for 10cents.
ReplyDeleteRe the bread and butter pudding,I make a big one with dark marmalade spread on the bread. Only I like ut but that's ok because it's one of those weird things that tastes even better after being frozen, defrosted and reheated. Win win. I may even add the odd dash of Cointreau and some orange zest to the custard mix if I'm feeling particularly in need of a bit of self administered TLC!
ReplyDeleteNow that sounds REALLY yummy! I think it's about time I made one for myself.....
