A big shop and giant cauliflower

I think the older I get, the more I hate shopping.  I know I could do it online and have it delivered but I hate doing that as well, and you can't get to look at and choose your own fruit and veg, or easily pick out substitutes of things they don't have.  Nor can you get any yellow stickered things online - I got several packs of meat and fish things yesterday that were yellow stickered, saving me over £14, it all went straight in the freezer.  It was a big shop, we used a big trolley rather than the smaller one we usually use, I definitely won't need anything other than a couple of top up shops for fresh veg and fruit for the next month, we're well stocked in the (admittedly unlikely) event of being snowed in for a month 😂.  So my job for this morning is to do another freezer and larder inventory, and lunch/dinner menus for a month.

Sometime over the next few days, I want to do some batch cooking of meals for both us and the dog....I got 2 packs of reduced chicken mince to cook up with veggies and brown rice for Betty, and reduced pork mince, diced chicken and cod for us.  I also got a ginormous cauliflower, an extra large one because they looked nice and fresh whereas the normal sized ones had very droopy leaves and were going a bit off colour, they'd obviously been there a while.  We like the leaves of fresh cauli lightly cooked as an extra veg, so I always try to get one that's got nice leaves.  The cauli will make around 8 portions of cauli cheese, even more if I add macaroni to it as well.  Cauli cheese, with or without macaroni, is one of my favourite meals, especially with a jacket spud.  I've got a few apples that need using up quickly, I bought Cox's a week or so ago, they're generally one of my favourites but these ones must have been in storage for a while, instead of being crisp, juicy and flavourful, they're soft and powdery, not nice to eat as they are but will be fine in a crumble.

We were forecast sunny spells yesterday but they didn't materialise, just the unrelenting cold greyness again.  Once again, the local forecaster on the TV said it's colder than average, it should be around 8 or 9 degrees this time of year but is only about 4, and feels even colder than that with the bitter wind.  They do say it should be sunnier and getting warmer - up to 11 deg wow! - from the middle of next week.  We can but hope.

I've just found out (I saw something online) that I'm now eligible for the shingles vaccine, as I'm now 65 - apparently I should have been offered it by our surgery but I've not heard from them yet.  I might ring and ask about it.  We know a few people who've had shingles and they all say it's horrible, really painful.  Husband had his jab a few years ago.

  1. I don't like on-line shopping, either, especially for fresh stuff. I like to choose my own fruit and veg. Some of it, as you say, doesn't look too fresh. I suppose if you really can't get to the shops, it's a good thing, but otherwise...
I got my first shingles jab last year, second one due in March (I didn't realise it was 2 vaccinations) and the nurse offered me the pneumonia jab at the same time. That's a one off vaccination, and I'll have owt for nowt! I remember one of my colleagues getting shingles when I worked. She was off work for a couple of weeks and said it was the most painful thing she'd experienced. So I don't want that, thank you very much! xx

  2. I have a “middle ground” for online shopping which works well: about once a month I have Sainsbury’s deliver everything which no-one can muck up - tins, jars, packeted stuff. It is rather a treat to have someone else bring all the heavy things to the door without me having had to lift them!

Subsequently, all I have to do every 7 or 8 days is go out for the nice fresh bits, which doesn’t take much time at all and is usually tagged onto the end of another trip rather than it being an expedition in its own right.

  3. We're probably going to get rid of our car later this year and so I'll have to think about how I'll do my food shopping. I think I'll do something similar to Bag End Gardener and get heavy, bulky or boring things delivered monthly (including things like loo rolls, washing powder, tins, etc) and then pop out twice a week with my wheelie shopping bag for fresh food. Good for you getting the shingles jab - I fall between the cracks, because they did a really weird thing with eligibility. If you were already 65 before 1 September 2023 then you have to wait until you're 70 before you can have it. But if you turn 65 after September 2023, you're eligible. I'm 68 so I have to wait! It sounds a bit illogical to me, but there we are ;)

    1. Re the shingles jab. I'm 68 too and the first time asked at my surgery I was told that I wasn't eligible (I reckon it was a pre-election ruse to make people think the govt was improving the health service). I asked again some months later and they said I could have it while I was seeing the nurse. (I live in Wales.)

    2. Not only do you live in a really beautiful country, but you also get the jab - I'm dead envious 😉

  4. Definitely get the shingles jab if you can, Alan had shingles last year and he was in so much pain and for a long time too.

  5. I'm like Jane above - it's odd how they changed the ages for younger people but I'll be able to get one after April.
Hope it does warm up - every time I go out in the car recently the ice symbol has come on - 4 degrees and less - for weeks

  6. Our new surgery is really on the ball. OH got called for his RSV jab, he's over 75 (I'm not old enough yet). I'm going tomorrow to have my shingles jab. All we ever got offered at our old Dr's was Covid and flu. Xx

  7. I had a text from NHS to ask at my surgery for the RSV jab. Rang up - the usual 4 minutes of blah, blah, blah on a recording, ending with the warning that if it's an emergency, to hang up and dial 999. A heart attack would have killed me by then! Eventually a receptionist (??) answered and asked me my birthdate . . . no friendly greeting . . . When I enquired about the RSV jab I was told that they weren't available yet.

  8. I think getting the shingles vaccine is a great idea. My sister has had outbreaks numerous times and is in great pain each time. I think that we can get ours as well for free, I need to check on that.
It is nice to know you are stocked up in case you are "snowed in". With this crazy weather both our countries are having one never knows.

    God bless.
