Non-dairy - it's a No from me

We normally have butter, Lurpak by choice if it's on offer, any other branded one that happens to be on offer if not, or even the supermarket's own brand.  Last week, Lurpak had an offer on their vegan plant-based butter, which I didn't even know they made.....as it was on offer I bought 2, one of which I froze for when sis comes.  I opened the other to have on our morning toast yesterday.....it's awful, it tastes like cheap margarine, and with an odd plasticky aftertaste.  I'm quite disappointed, I'd had high expectations with it being Lurpak.  Never mind, I'll use it in baking.  I've also tried the Philadelphia plant based soft 'cheese' spread.....not overly keen on that either.  I guess, like most things, it's a case of getting used to them.  However, to be perfectly honest, since my dairy intolerances are quite mild, I doubt I'll be bothering with any of the dairy-free substitutes after sister has gone home, just getting them in for her each time she comes down to stay.  The Oakwood smoked vegan 'cheddar' I quite like as slices with crackers, but not terribly keen on a cheese sauce with it, too gloopy as I said the other day and although a mild smoky flavour comes through, it didn't really taste cheesy.  I'll continue with my lacto-free milk I've been having for years, as ordinary milk does make my sinus problems much worse.  SAM and Brenda, I think you're both right, it is really a case of enjoying the dairy and meat free things in their own right, rather than as substitutes....the problem is, though, I don't really like the actual taste of them, whatever they are.  I guess if I had no choice and had to have them for medical reasons, I'd soon begin to like them!

With some trepidation, I set out to use the printer yesterday - astonishingly, it worked straight away, with no problems whatsoever!  As I hadn't needed to do any printing for months and months prior to yesterday, I was expecting no end of problems.  What a relief!  It was obviously my lucky day 😂😂

The weather forecast is so good for the rest of this week and through the weekend, warm and sunny (with a possible shower or two on Friday), I expect we'll be busy doing some more garden jobs, taking advantage of the sunshine.  We'll take Betty for a beach run or two as well.

Husband's got to take the car to a garage next week, he had a safety recall letter come through, apparently a fuse needs changing as it could be a fire risk.  We've got the chap from 'H' Blinds coming next week as well, to give us quotes for the kitchen and lounge windows.  I'll be glad to get vertical blinds, we've got nets at the moment and I'm really not a fan of them.

  1. Sorry you didn't get on with the dairy-free stuff. I've not found a plant "cheese" I really like. As I said, the Applewood is OK, but that's the best of a bad lot. No great praise! I'm waiting for someone to make a really good plant-based Stilton or Gorgonzola. I think I might have a long wait!
My washing actually dried on the line yesterday. Oh, joy! Looks set to be another nice, sunny, if cold day again today. Spring is in the air! xx

    1. La Fauxmagerie do a really good blue cheese. It’s pricey but is great for a treat. I don’t think they do online orders anymore but I’ve seen them stocked in Waitrose if you have one of those near you.

    2. Thanks Fiona. I think I did try it but wasn't very impressed! Maybe it's now improved but I think our Waitrose has stopped selling it anyway. xx

    3. At least you gave it a try. I hope you can find something you like.

  2. I'm not keen on vegetarian substitute food and would much rather do without.

  3. Molly is completely dairy free, I have been trying the bit's I purchase for her, and compared to our regular items, it has no taste, she is happy as she has not known anything else. I have already got her dairy free chocolate for our Easter egg hunt.

  4. I use butter for cooking and baking but have ProActiv Light spread on bread, etc. Maybe I just got used to it but I don't notice and nasty aftertaste and don't remember anything objectionable from when I started to use it. It is states it's 100% plant based and palm oil free.

    1. Sorry for the messy text, J's carer arrived just as I was about to finish and check before sending.

  5. OH takes oat milk now, but seems ok with Olive light spread. Dairy does make his sinus problem worse and he's already started with hayfever. Hope you get your vertical blinds sorted, I'm really pleased with mine, more privacy and they diffuse the sun (when we get any). The only problem is the cat doesn't like them as she can't sit on the sill and stare out the window anymore. Xx

  6. We have the same forecast here in East Cornwall, so looking forward to the sunny days to follow. I dried a big towel wash and finished it off in the tumble dryer to soften them. I'm hoping the temperature will rise; it was only 5 degrees when I put bird food out this morning. Brrrr! AH, it's now 9 degrees according to my laptop. That's better.

  7. We use "I can't believe it's not butter". I use it as a spread and in cooking and it tastes fine to me.

  8. Flora Buttery is vegan.
I started buying it because of the flavour and texture and only realised much later that it was vegan.
I've just had it melted on toast and it was delicious.
I use it to make pastry as well.

  9. I often wonder if I could actually become vegan as so many of those choices really do not appeal to me.

    God bless.

  10. I've not heard of a single vegan or dairy-free person that has liked the Lurpak plant-based version. I use Naturli, which is much more like original Lurpak. It's quite expensive though, so I tend to use Flora Buttery for cakes and mashed potato etc. I've never like the vegan Philadelphia, much too bland. I've also never faffed about too much with 'cheese sauces', I usually use hummus instead. It was well worth you experimenting though, you now know what you'll never buy again. 😄
