I can't remember if I was diagnosed with wheat intolerance, gluten intolerance or both years ago, too long ago now to remember. I guess I've always sort of thought of them both being more or less the same thing anyway. In practical terms, I don't think it makes much difference, I just assume I'm intolerant to most 'normal' flours and baked goods made of normal flours.
Yesterday evening we had our fish and chips sitting in the car on the seafront - I didn't want to eat outside the car as I didn't fancy being divebombed by seagulls, of which there are a lot there. I forgot to ring up and order the GF battered fish in advance - you can just ask for it when you're there, but being a Friday evening it was very busy and they said there would be a 15 or 20 min wait for GF fish (which obviously has to be cooked separately), so I just had the ordinary batter. Betty and I shared my cod and chips, we had half each, although neither of us ate all the batter. Betty certainly enjoyed hers, as did I, but I did think it tasted rather oily for my liking now, my tastebuds have changed over the past few months. And, guess what, I had a reaction to the meal, probably to the batter - stomach and bowel upset in the early hours. So now I know, both pasties and fish n chips are still off the menu for the next few weeks at least.
Husband's brain scan took an awfully long time - 45 minutes, his last one a few years back only took about 15 mins. I was getting a bit worried and just thinking about asking the receptionist to find out if he was ok when he then came out, finally. During the time he was in there, around a dozen other people went in, had their procedures and came back out before him. Mind you, it's a diagnostic centre for all sorts of x-rays and scans, not just MRI brain scans, so the others could have been having different procedures. Husband said he had 5 scans altogether, by the time he came out he said his head was spinning, the machine is exceptionally noisy, he could barely even hear the Meatloaf Bat Out of Hell soundtrack he'd requested. We won't be getting the results anytime soon, there's a backlog apparently, as seems to be normal nowadays.
Cloudy and hazy today, not much sun but very warm and humid. Heatwave forecast from Monday, I would rather it was just plain hot than humid and sticky, humidity makes me feel quite ill. For the first time in ages, we've actually got nothing on the calendar for next week, no medical appointments for either of us, so at least we don't have to do anything or go anywhere if it's too hot.
One of husband's sisters, the next one down in age from him, has just been diagnosed with a form of asbestosis/lung cancer. She's said she doesn't want chemotherapy as she doesn't want to lose her hair! Up to her of course, but personally I'd rather have my life than my hair. It's not just the loss of hair I know, chemo can make people feel very ill indeed. I guess none of us know how we'd cope with things until we actually have to.
Well, it does seem to be wheat/gluten that causes you problems, as you suspected. It's just a shame that you have to be ill to confirm it!
ReplyDeleteGlad the brain scan is done and dusted. The wait for the results isn't good, but it is what it is.
Sorry to hear about your husband's sister. My husband's auntie had lung cancer and refused chemo/radiotherapy. She was in her 80's and said she didn't want to end her life being ill from the treatment. I can understand that.
It was hot and humid here yesterday. Fresher today thank goodness. In fact, I've just put my slippers on, my bare feet were getting cold! 🤣 xx
I had to stop eating frozen fish in either batter or breadcrumbs some years ago as it causes gut problems but I had no problems having battered fish in a pub. No idea what they're putting in the frozen stuff, as I tried it from several different supermarkets.
ReplyDeleteMRI scans are incredibly noisy with loud knocking and another sound like a raucous buzzing alarm!
Not all chemo causes hair loss ( my aunt had it for breast cancer and retained hers), but I can understand your sister in law not wanting the other ill effects, particularly if it wouldn't extend her life by much.
Enjoy your appointment free week xx
So sorry to read about your husband's sister. My mom had lung cancer and had one lobe removed. However the cancer had spread and chemo just wasn't available for the type she had.
ReplyDeleteGlad that the MRI scan is now history, and hopefully you will know the results as soon as possible.
God bless.
It's good to get the scan done, isn't it, even if the results take ages to come.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry the batter made you unwell - that's nor good but I guess having it confirmed is helpful. Are you feeling OK again now?
It's a difficult choice, isn't it - I am so sorry your s.i.l. is going through such a rough time. xx
