Spectacular

We had the most spectacular thunderstorm late yesterday afternoon, loud thunderclaps and lots of very bright lightning flashes coming literally every few seconds, so the storm must have been (and stayed) right overhead, for about 40 minutes.  Our electricity and internet went off, although came back on quite quickly, some of the TV channels were missing for about 30 mins though, much to husband's disgust.  At least the garden got a good watering and it freshened the air up, albeit briefly.  Betty hates storms and was quite disturbed, her eyes were huge, she was whimpering and kept trying to hide behind my legs or underneath my chair.  I reassure her but don't make too much of a fuss about it, I don't want her to think it's a big problem.  I remember years ago when we were kids, mum used to run round the house in a panic switching everything electrical off and pulling all the plugs out.

Husband realised (too late) yesterday during the storm that he'd left all the car windows wide open from when he went out in the morning.  So the inside of the car, as well as the outside (he almost never washes our car) got a good soaking 😒.  He's got the car doors open now, the seats are still wet from yesterday.

I had a few things to do indoors yesterday morning but told husband we'd go outside to start putting up the trellis panels afterwards.  He wanted to get straight on with it though, so I said I'd be out as soon as possible and told him to be careful and take regular breaks.  After half an hour I went out to tell him to take a break and come in for a cold drink, which he did very reluctantly.  A short while later I saw from the kitchen window that he was leaning against the fence, bent over with his head down, clearly unwell, I immediately went and got him inside.  He insisted he didn't have chest pains but felt nauseous and dizzy, I got him another glass of water and made him go and lie down in his room.  I think he just overdid things, he won't listen to me, goes at everything like a bull in a china shop and forgets that he simply cannot do the same things he did 20 years ago, he's an idiot at times.  He says he feels fine this morning and wants to carry on, I've told him he's not to start until I go out there with him, and we'll only be working for an hour or so.

The builders were here and banging away at 07.30 this morning, yes it's a bit irritating but it's not like they woke us up, I'd got up at 6 and husband about half an hour later.  Our next door neighbours, however, aren't early risers so I don't suppose they're best pleased.  I just think perhaps the builders want to get finished earlier today before it gets too baking hot this afternoon....and maybe if they get cracking even earlier then the job will be finished sooner.  It's a big job though, converting an ancient single storey stone barn into a 2-storey holiday home, so it's not like they're going to be finished anytime soon.  So far they seem to have dug out all the floor inside and are in the process of blocking up one of the existing doorways and creating a new doorway.

Right, husband's had his breakfast (he's ready to eat almost as soon as he's got out of bed), we're both washed and dressed, Betty's been walked and had her breakfast, so it's time for another coffee before going outside to carry on with the fencing.

  1. I love a good storm, but I know pets can be frightened by them. When we had our 2 cats, one would hide behind the sofa if there was anything scary going on.
At least, in this heat, the car seats should dry quickly! I suspect your husband was affected by the heat, as well as age. Good job he's got you to keep an eye on him! I do feel sorry for people who have to work in this heat. It can't be fun. xx

  3. It was crazy, just went really dark and then torrential rain and thunder. Poor Betty, our Springer Spaniels were like that too. I was watching the videos on FB of rain water flooding down Glastonbury High Street and the local supermarkets were flooded. There were several trees down too.
I wonder whether the builders will start and finish early in the heat the next few days?

  4. I giggled when I read your story about your mother. Growing up my mom was also terrified of storms and would bundle us kids up at the first sign of one and take us to a neighbours. Finally I said I wasn't going and she took of her coat and the rest of the families coats as well and turned walking away. I settled myself on the chesterfield with a book and during the height of the storm decided perhaps I should look for Mom. Her and my brother's and sister were all hiding under the bed in the boys room.

    God bless.

  5. Sounds like your husband was affected by the heat and dehydrated, exacerbated by physical activity. In this heat we can lose hydration very quickly. Electrolyte tablets dissolved in his drinking water will help replacing the lost minerals. I get them through Amazon but they are available in Supermarkets. Our local stores only do orange flavoured ones, which I'm not keen on, reminds me too much of orange squash! ;-)
