All shopped out and stocked up

So what did I think of the Ocado delivery?  Well, firstly I was a bit frustrated to note that it came from their big depot in Avonmouth, Bristol.  Whilst that means, as one of you pointed out (Sue I think), there's less likelihood of substitutions or missing items (there weren't any!), it's a lot of miles for a delivery of food - around 57 each way.  You can choose a delivery day/time when they're already delivering to someone nearby, which offsets it a bit.  It's still a bit of a conscience pricker though.  The delivery was on time, actually 10 mins early, and the driver was lovely, chatty, friendly and very helpful - he would have brought the shopping right into the kitchen and unpacked it for us if we had wanted him to - not necessary but nice to know.  The shopping was well packed and all in good nick - no dented tins or broken eggs.  The only thing I wasn't pleased with was the cauliflower I'd ordered - it was a really small one and already had brown spots on it, had I seen it whilst the driver was still here (it was at the bottom of the veg bag) I'd have given it back to him.  No matter, just one item that wasn't up to standard isn't bad at all, and I'll be using it today anyway, so it's ok.  So yes, I'll be happy to use the Ocado delivery service again, probably once a month or 6 weeks.

This morning we went on the free shoppers bus to Bridgwater - pretty much the same number of (old) people as the last time so the coach was only half full.  Husband sat in the seat in front of me this time, rather than beside me, as there were plenty of seats and it was quite hot.....actually a very hot day again today.  Much better not having a hot body pressed up against me!  Especially when he keeps dozing off and leaning on me....

We got everything we needed and wanted - several bags of the freeze dried raw dog food from the big pet shop, and a large bag of the little treat biscuits Betty likes.  A few more of the M&S chilled ready meals, and the sourdough crumpets I like.  Some books in the charity shop - they didn't have such a good selection this time - well, not ones I hadn't already read, so I only got 4.  I also bought a pretty summer top in shades of lilac in there, brand new with the Next sales ticket still attached, priced at £16.99 but the charity shop was selling it for £3, bargain.  In Sainsbury's I got some cotton vests for sleeping in.  Husband got a few toiletries he wanted from Superdrug.  It was very hot on the way home and I was glad to get off the coach....Betty was extremely pleased to see us when we got home.

I'm all shopped out now - my underbed food store box is now 3/4 full, the freezer is very nearly full, as are the kitchen larder cupboards, so I won't be doing any shopping for a couple of weeks now.  With the garden producing lots of veg, we're all stocked up.  Tomorrow I'm having a day of rest, it's been a busy week with one thing and another.

  1. Well, it looks like you've had an exhausting, but productive time! Just a thought, Sooze, I have an old fashioned hand fan which my niece bought me a few years ago. I've been using it quite a lot during this hot weather. Maybe you could get one for your bus trips. Easy and light to pop in your bag. Enjoy your rest day. I think you've earned it! xx

    God bless.

  4. I noticed in Sainsbury's that cauliflowers are pretty small with lots of greenery (yes, I do use the leaves too ;-). Maybe they are the new English produce and with the hot weather we were having their growth could be stunted this year.

    1. You could be right regarding the size, Annabeth. It was the brown spots on the cauli that I was more annoyed about - and the leaves weren't fresh enough to use either (like you, I do normally use the leaves).

  5. The day of rest is absolutely deserved but you should also take credit in the way you've stocked up and prepared.
