Two lives

This morning when I got up, my feet were cold, for the first time in months.  Think it's time to stop wearing my flip flops all the time and wear slippers instead - at least early morning and evening.  The evenings are really drawing in, I hate it - and it'll be even darker in the evenings at the end of the month when the clocks go back.  I'm really not keen on this time of year, definitely Spring and early summer for me.

It's a blimmin nuisance not having hot water - have to boil the kettle for all the washing up, and to have a wash - there was no way I was going over to the cold shower block (with the assorted wildlife) this chilly morning.  I'll have a shower when we go home today so I can wash my hair, leaning over to put my head in the sink isn't easy with a bad back and hip - although we can't go home just for a shower every day!  We'll ring the engineer this morning and hope that he can come asap.

We began clearing the very overgrown area at the back of the caravan yesterday, husband took 6 bags of rubbish to the tip, only a couple of which were plant prunings, the rest being dozens of broken plastic flowerpots, assorted bits of wood, broken old tools, half empty tins of paint and bottles of liquid - who knows what, the labels had worn away.  There's at least another 8 filled bags waiting to go.  I've said before the previous owners were old and unwell in their latter years, and it shows - there must be a couple of years worth of rubbish they'd just dumped behind and under the caravan, not to mention all the very overgrown shrubbery.  We've got a couple more days worth of work to do out there, but will have a very nice and useful paved area when it's done - the slabs are already there, they were buried under the tons of rubbish and plant overgrowth.  Lots are laid already, but there are several more spare ones that were just hidden under everything, they'll be useful to create a path from the garden gate to the back of the van.  Husband even found a large and very attractive decorated stone bird bath hidden round there.  Not sure yet where we'll put it, but I'll find somewhere.

Whilst we're here at the caravan, I'm aware I'm kind of putting off stressful issues that are going on in the background, but will have to be addressed soon.  It's like a different world here, largely free of worries and tension.....the only thing we've (the collective 'we', all the residents here) had to worry about is the fact that the owner hadn't mowed the grass for getting on for a fortnight! (he'd been too busy with other things, apparently).  The grass is so wet with dew now in the mornings, another sign of the time of year, which meant we were all getting wet feet and ankles walking back and forth.  Ah well, only a minor thing, and the owner finally got round to sitting on his ride-on mower and doing it all yesterday evening (his ears must have been burning 😁).  I've got a lot of thinking to do the next few days, can't keep putting things off indefinitely.

My nephew is getting married early October, having had to postpone the wedding twice due to Covid.  It's up in the Midlands and, once again, we would have had to book a night or 2 in a hotel, and then there's the problem of what to do with the dog whilst we were attending the wedding/reception, so again we've chosen not to go.  They understand.  It's not all down to Covid, it's health problems too, both husband's and mine.  And as I get older, I find everything so much more stressful and hard work to organise.  All the organisation always falls to me and I do find it a big strain nowadays.

  1. I think it’s another month yet before the clocks go back but I know what you mean. We wake up to misty windows most mornings now (on the outside of the glass). Yes sorting out problems is never easy but you only have one life and don’t need others, including family, ruining it.

    1. Yes you're right, clocks going back is next month. I don't know if I'm coming or going right now!

  2. The garden at our cottage was just like your caravan. We uncovered so much - all the old window frames and doors, cast iron guttering, old plates, 6 assorted teapots, old bits of fencing, even the garden pond!....you name it it was burried in the undergrowth It was like doing an archealogical dig. Even now we still uncover a few bits and pieces. The lady who lived here was 103 when she died and I think when she had any work done the rubbish was just put outside somewhere and then nature took over and the leafmold just built up over the pile.
We escape to the cottage for the same reason and because we are so far away from anyone they don't bother troubling us with any problems as it would be a long way to go to help them and somehow they tend to manage.
Shame about your boiler Sooze - a good engineer might be able to get it going again. If you have a flame failure pilot light then you have to relight the pilot light with a match to get it going again and overide the flame failure. Good luck with it. xx

    1. Tried lighting with a lighter - no joy. Engineer coming Thursday. I'm glad we haven't had the amount of rubbish you have!

  3. Oh I know exactly what you mean about this time of year. It suddenly got so cold here I had to hunt for the winter duvet or shiver all night! It seems like only last week that it was so warm I had to have the fan on at night. I, too, find it such a hassle to travel anywhere with my health problems. Three years ago I thought nothing of hopping in the car with a weekend bag & my knitting. These days I need medical equipment & oxygen bottles . . . .

  4. I've really noticed the shortening days this past week or so. With the daylight only appearing around 6am it's very different to a month ago when I woke up to sunshine trying to shine through the curtains much earlier.

    1. Yes, I really don't like the shortened daylight.

  5. End of BST is Sunday 31st October so we have a while yet to make the most of any sunny days. Then we snuggle down and hibernate! Personally, I'll still be throwing doors and windows wide as often as possible.
Will you be draining all the pipes in the caravan before closing it down for the winter months. I'm surprised that you won't be allowed on site - I'd want to check my van regularly for cold weather damage, icing particularly.

    1. Yes we'll drain down, take clothes and bedding home and move all sofa cushions, mattresses etc away from the walls. It's not the owner who won't allow us on site, it's the local authority's rules.

  6. I'm clinging on to summer with my fingernails! I hate the shorter, darker days of winter (and the cold). Still, it makes us appreciate the spring and summer I suppose! I hope you're able to reconcile the stressful issues now you've had a little break. You're sensible to decline attending your nephew's wedding. Travel and health problems aren't a good mix. Maybe they can live stream the wedding, so you can be there virtually. xx

    1. I don't know if they're live streaming it, I hope so, that'll be good.

  7. It sure is getting dark earlier and light later here as well. Winter will be here before we know it.

Yep, as we get older, it really does get harder to do much traveling. This will probably have been the last year we travel to Jasper as it is an extremely long drive even with the break of visiting our son.

    God bless.

    1. Travelling long distances really wears me out - and I don't even do the driving! It also makes my hip ache terribly. Husband finds it so difficult now with his heart failure, he gets so very tired.

  8. It must have been like a treasure hunt, clearing that area, but it sounds as if it will be well worth the work in both discoveries and in attractive usefulness.
I see you have got an engineer coming on Thursday so, fingers crossed, he or she will be able to sort it out for you.
And very, very wise about the wedding. Someone suggested live streaming which is a great idea and I am glad everyone understands. There is a limit and as we get older, it becomes harder and harder and just, frankly, hardly worth the effort and stress.
    xx
